In this issue of K’s Trends, we are honored to invite the Wonderlabs team to discuss how digital creation leverages advanced 3D printing technology and material science to leap from "virtual concept" to "physical realization."
From Digital Experience to Physical Art: The Story of Wonderlabs and 3D Printing

As a team renowned for pioneering digital experiences, Wonderlabs' path crossed with 3D printing technology as early as 2013. At a brand exhibition, the team used a Replicator 2 printer to produce exquisite custom gifts based on client product models to distribute to visitors on-site, receiving overwhelming praise. This early endeavor acted like a key, opening the door to their artistic experiments in transforming "virtual models" into "tangible entities."
Since then, 3D printing technology has gradually integrated into the team's daily creative process. Whether utilizing FDM or resin SLA processes, Wonderlabs has continually experimented with 3D printing components and props for art installations. In the early days, however, limited by equipment precision and printing time, these applications were mostly confined to small-scale prototyping and localized trial runs.
The turning point arrived after 2021. With the advent of high-speed 3D printing equipment, printing efficiency and stability underwent a massive leap forward. This allowed Wonderlabs to completely break free from the constraints of "small-scale prototyping." They began extensively deploying 3D-printed components in large-scale physical art installations, stepping into high-precision physical art manufacturing.

In Wonderlabs' portfolio of past projects (such as Magnolia Dance, Bambu Lab collaborations, or the Tales of Current City pavilion), 3D printing has consistently played a pivotal role. Today, we highlight their most representative experimental project—Real-Life Mario Kart—to revisit the creative journey behind it.
Original Intent and Design Philosophy
The project stemmed from a profound observation of modern life: smartphones have deeply penetrated daily routines, and face-to-face human interaction is quietly slipping away. The team aimed to break beyond the screen to draw people back from the virtual digital world into vibrant physical settings, rekindling the sense of shared connection and camaraderie from playing together in childhood.
End-to-End Technical Execution
- Creative Integration of Cutting-Edge Tech: The team used high-speed cameras to track the motion trajectories of RC cars in real time while leveraging Projection Mapping to overlay dynamic virtual power-ups and visual effects onto the physical track.
- Parametric Modeling and 3D Print Fabrication: Relying on 3D printing and digital modeling, the team performed parametric design using software like Blender and Fusion 360. To accurately recreate the game's highly saturated and detail-rich color palette, the team selected premium materials including Kexcelled PLA and PLA M to layer-by-layer print highly customizable 3D tracks, mechanism obstacles, and vehicle modification parts.
- Rapid and Flexible Creative Iteration: This digital fabrication method drastically shortened the production cycle from concept sketches to physical objects. Outstanding material stability and high print success rates allowed every scene detail to be instantly modified and flexibly iterated based on user testing feedback.
The Final Virtual-Real Immersive Experience

Real RC cars were able to race freely across 3D-printed physical tracks, interacting seamlessly with projected virtual power-ups: hitting a virtual coin triggered real-time score bonuses, while colliding with virtual obstacles activated physical or visual interference mechanisms. This hybrid gameplay vastly expanded the expressive boundary of imagination, making every drive full of surprises and the unknown.
The Advantages of 3D Printing: Empowering Artistic Creation at a Deeper Level
For Wonderlabs, the greatest value 3D printing brings to art installations can be summarized in a few words: "What you see is what you get."
In traditional artistic creation and execution, designs often fall victim to factory processing limitations, conventional cutting techniques, or site installation constraints, leading to the awkward gap between "what's on paper" and "what's built." 3D printing helps designers rapidly validate feasibility at an early stage, allowing them to intuitively feel the volume and structure of their work. This enables instant adjustments during the design phase to faithfully preserve the original concept.
"In our creative work, we frequently encounter situations where 'if not for 3D printing, this piece simply couldn't be made.' For example, we once designed an installation featuring an extremely fine, ultra-high-precision honeycomb structure that had to be molded as a single piece. After consulting multiple factories, neither traditional CNC nor laser cutting could achieve it. Ultimately, it was through 3D printing with engineering-grade materials that we accomplished precise fabrication, allowing the design to land perfectly."

Wonderlabs: The most immediate impression was the incredibly rich color palette, along with high color vibrancy and contrast. For instance, when creating Real-Life Mario Kart, we needed a wide array of high-saturation, high-texture colors to recreate the iconic visual style of the game. Q: Do material properties directly influence your design decisions?
Wonderlabs: Absolutely. Both the visual color texture and the mechanical performance of a material—especially layer adhesion and stability during long printing runs—directly influence our design thinking and material selection right from the initial concept phase.
Q: What are your expectations for Kexcelled's future product R&D?
Wonderlabs: We really hope Kexcelled introduces systematic themed color sets in the future, such as a "Morandi Palette" series. This would allow designers to work directly with unified, sophisticated color combinations when building complex installations, further boosting design and creative efficiency.
